Overview of Hotel Nikara
Welcome to Nikara Yala. This small, exclusive boutique hotel in Kirinda, near Yala National Park, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, is a blissfully indulgent retreat, promising superior comfort, luxurious facilities and five-star service. Our seven air conditioned guestrooms – some with private plunge pools – are equipped with custom-designed furnishings and hand-picked mod cons, offering the optimal setting to relax and unwind. Our restaurant serves up predominantly organic cuisine, and our swimming pool offers a welcome respite from the excitement of hot and dusty game drives.
The hotel is set in an acre of landscaped tropical gardens abundant with coconut palms, neem trees, pineapples and flowering frangipani. It directly accesses Kirinda’s westerly Nidangala Beach, a rugged photo-worthy sweep of golden sand dotted with granite boulders and huge rocky outcrops, beyond which, in the distant Indian Ocean, is the slim spire of the Great Basses Lighthouse. This wild setting perfectly complements the hotel’s many indulgencies and offers discerning travellers an exclusive, private base for exploring Kirinda’s cultural and natural attractions.
Leopard-rich Yala National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s must-visit attractions, however Kirinda’s picturesque locality offers so much more. Our wild, boulder-strewn beach is historically rich, and on its western strands sits the revered Nidangala Rock, an exceptional spot for sunset. Kirinda’s famed Maha Vihara Devi temple is less than a kilometre away, whilst inland, the scene is a stunning tapestry of paddy fields, villages and temples. Bundala National Park, an important RAMSAR wetlands, attracts birders (especially during the winter migratory season) whilst the Great Basses Reef, 10km offshore, is one of Sri Lanka’s best, yet challenging, dive sites.
Conceived by Sri Lankan architect Asela Perera the hotel sensitively complements and preserves its natural environment. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the bedrooms artfully frame views of the sea, the gardens and this wild, unspoilt seaside setting, whilst the open-sided living and dining areas were left open to the play of light and cooling breezes. The garden is a natural sanctuary, and existing trees were woven gracefully into the design. The hotel’s timber floors, the winding staircase and the custom-made furnishings have all been crafted from reclaimed wood. Keen to do our bit for the environment we minimize our use of plastics to reduce waste, use solar for water heating and inverter air conditioners in all guestrooms.
